Hi, I’m Steve Miller.  I’m the Health, Safety & Wellbeing Advisor for Port Nicholson Fisheries.  I'm based in Napier and have been at PNF since 2019.

Health & Safety is my passion.  in my role, I support our people, our leaders and our organisation to build and maintain a strong health and safety culture where we have a shared safety mindset and work together to achieve our health and safety goals and to keep ourselves and others safe at work.

Prior to being promoted to my current role, I was a Driver/Factory Process worker, which was really varied, where no day was the same.   I drove our trucks from Wellington to Auckland and along the East Coast picking up kōura (crayfish) from our fishers, returning them to the depot for grading and delivery to our export factories.  I was also a factory process worker in our depot and a Health & Safety Supervisor.

Prior to coming to Port Nicholson Fisheries, I was at Moana Pacific Fisheries (since 1995) as a long and short haul truck driver transporting wet fish and kōura and as a Leading Hand.  While at Moana I developed an interest in the live kōura operations and was fortunate to be seconded to Port Nicholson Fisheries in 2016, before becoming permanent in 2019.

Over the years I’m proud to have achieved 18 NZQA qualifications in the fishing industry and was thrilled to be awarded “Best performance in Health and Safety Management over all plants” at Port Nicholson Fisheries in 2017.

I love working at Port Nicholson Fisheries because of its great culture and the diversity of people across our business and our fishers.  Our people are friendly, inclusive, and always available for a chat. No job is the same and it changes daily which also keeps it interesting and fresh.

There are many opportunities for training and development at Port Nicholson especially in my area of interest, Health & Safety.  I’m a H&S First Aider, H&S Wellbeing Warrior and have just completed the “Become A Legend” course which builds on my skills to be a health and safety leader.

Outside of work my family comes first!  I’m also a committee member in our local car club.  We love giving back to the community such as doing toy runs to donate toys to low decile schools.
